about

LTK-002 (Lo-Tek Oakland)

We're kicking off our first Lo-Tek Oakland release with a collaboration EP by Soeneido and Benito. Fallen Angels is a visitation of some darker more dystopian and cyber punk themes explored in the styles of Jungle and Drum n Bass.

The first featured track "Inna Fect" came together around the vocal sample "In effect" and spiraled into an idea of using samples from the movie 12 Monkeys. It was a perfect opportunity to twist the narrative into themes of viral infection, global pandemics, and conspiratorial plots by animal rights activists... The track has an eerie ambience that lays behind a whirlwind of amen break bits flying everywhere.

Second track The Rippa, was originally titled "Ikue" for the longest time simplely because we used a vocal sample from Ikue Asazaki. However, we went with calling it The Rippa par the other vocal sampled used. It has an abrasive amen flavor with stretched vocal samples thrown about everywhere. Benito and I shared this track back and forth several times before landing on a final version.

Gmork is a more heavy breakbeat type track. It reminds me of the styles of Cylon Recordings of the early 2000s era drum n bass. The main vocal sample used here is from the film Neverending Story: The track basically attempts to portray an all encompassing and nightmarish darkness called "The Nothing" that devours everything in its path. Benito and I both enjoyed this era of 80's films as well as many other sci fi classics; giving us a lot of inspiration for writing music.

Final tune Lo-Tek Style is a track written by me and was a concept I really wanted to sign strictly to this sub label Lo Tek for obvious reasons. I originally heard the vocal sample from Johhny Mnemonic used by 3 Da Hard Way in "Low Tek" on H2OH Recordings. Their version is a definitely a hardcore gabber track that came out in 2000, but I loved that track and that vocal sample so much and wanted to revamp the same energy in a new jungle/breakbeat hardcore version.
